Goa: In a joint raid conducted by The Captain of Ports and Mines Department on Friday morning, seven canoes have been seized which were involved in illegal extraction of sand from the Tiracol river at Porascadem.

Around 20 labourers have been detained who were found extracting sand at the site.

The officials said that four out of seven canoes had no registration numbers.

All the seized canoes and detained labourers have been taken into custody by Pernem police and an offence under section 141 of the IPC has been booked against them.

This is the second raid this weekend. The mines department had also seized stone transporting vehicles at Patradevi, four days ago.
