Usgao (Goa): The sabotage by a group of workers at Goa Meat Complex Limited (GMCL) on Sunday morning brought Goa on the brink of major shortage of beef supply in the state.

The beef is in a major demand during the Sunday when consumption is high, but the vehicles of GMCL did not reach the market.

The loading of beef could not happen as the power supply had stopped and the generator which was supposed to be providing the supply was not started by the workers.

GMCL managing director Dr Uday Pednekar, however, refused to comment on sabotage but admitted that there was delay due to power cut. The supply was later restored, he said.

“The problem persisted for few hours due to which there was a delay in supply of beef this morning. The vehicles which were waiting for the beef supply to be loaded were stranded for hours,” he said.

GMCL is the lone abattoir licenced by the state government which slaughters the animals brought in by the traders. The animals are slaughters in the evening and kept in the chiller before loading them in the vehicles next day.

Pednekar said that there was electricity during the wee hours today due to which the loading was delayed creating scarcity of beef in the state’s market.

The abattoir at GMCL was modernized recently by the state government spending Rs 13 crore. Around 25-30 animals are slaughter at this facility everyday.
