Panaji (Goa): The Congress party on Monday demanded that the reservation for Schedule Caste for the panchayat elections be given in all 12 talukas and not just in Pernem and Bicholim.
Addressing media persons, the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) office bearer Shambhu Bhai Bandekar demanded that35 wards should be reserved for SC covering all talukas.
He opposed SC reservation in nine wards in Pernem and Bicholim taluka
“If you are going as per the SC population then it is spread across entire State and not just in two talukas. Considering their population, not less than 35 wards should be reserved for SC,” Bandekar demanded threatening to approach Court if government fails to give the justice to the community.
For the very first time, the Government has given two percent reservation to SC for the panchayat polls, which are slated to be held on June 11. Of the total 1522 wards in 186 panchayats, nine wards are reserved for SC.
The notification in regards to reservation and delimitation of wards is expected to be issued on Tuesday by the State government.
Along with SC, 12 percent reservation is given to Schedule tribes, 27 percent to OBC and 33 percent to women.
