Panaji (Goa): Availing compensation from the State government might not be easy for the shack owners who have suffered massive loss due to Cyclone Ockhi. The Goa government has begun examining the cases following ‘legal procedures’ considering that majority shack operators have violated CRZ norms.
The State has also refused to term the Cyclone effects as State Disaster.
“The shack operators will be compensated subject to legal procedures. They have been asked to submit details of losses to the North and South Collectors within two days. Accordingly, the Collectors along with the Tourism and Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority teams will carry out physical verification,” Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte said addressing a press meet after a meeting of State Disaster Management Authority this evening.
The Collectors will take the report from the Tourism Department on the CRZ violations by some shack operators before disposing of any case.
Many shacks, located close to the shores were flooded after huge waves gushed in. The impact was a result of Cyclone couple with high tide and full moon on Sunday and Monday. The shack owners have estimated loss in several lakhs while arguing that despite asking the GCZMA to allocate shacks above high tide, it was not heeded to.
President of All Goa Shack Operators Cruz Cardozo alleged that GCZMA alloted the shacks close to the shoreline although the shack owners had objected to it. “The officials told us that allowing shacks above high tide line would destroy sand dunes,” he commented.
According to preliminary report by North Collector Nila Mohanan, considerable damage was caused to almost 50 shacks in Morjim, Mandrem, Arambol and Querim beaches in Pernem Taluka. In Bardez Taluka, only soil erosion in Anjuna and Baga beaches and damage to a retaining wall at Coco Beach in Nerul was reported. There was no danger caused to human life in North Goa District as necessary instructions were given by the Talathis to the foreigners, tourists and locals not to enter in sea/beaches due to Ockhi Cyclone.
In South, there is no reported damage to shacks in Mormugao Taluka but retaining wall at Hollant, Issorcim is damaged whereas almost 60 mtrs of the Floating Jetty at Baina Beach was washed away.
