Porvorim (Goa): A stretch along busy Porvorim highway, which is marred by frequent traffic jams, turned into a theatre this morning with several enthusiasts doing what they can do the best. While some danced to the tune of Hindi songs, some displayed their martial art skills, and some gave a message of protecting the environment by shunning plastic bags.
That is why even Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who arrived here to inaugurate the event along with Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte skipped his official car and travelled on bicycle inside the event. He termed his bicycle ride as an attempt to give a message to protect the environment.
The like-minded citizens from Porvorim had organized NoMoZo, an event which makes it mandatory for everyone to keep away their vehicles and make the best use of the empty road. Renowned DJ Nikhil Chinnappa too was seen participating in the event adding glamour to it.
While Goa’s own Bondo along with his group was seen playing the percussion, the to-be teachers from Nirmala Institute of Education at Altinho were seen teaching the young minds how to make best out of waste.
Shunning the use of plastic bags, the to-be teachers were training the kids to prepare paper bags. When Parrikar visited the stall, he was excited to see the green message being spread by them calling the entire project as ‘Wealth Out of waste.’
Down the road, a group was seen performing street play professing the message of equality while Taekwondo experts and students were seen displaying some of the tough acts of self-protection.
The traditional dance with a boy dressed up as Lord Krishna was the cynosure of all eyes when he was literally lifted in the air standing on the strong shoulders of elders from his clan. The devotional music filled the air.
If one had to walk further, a group was seen dancing to the tune of English music, while bicycle enthusiasts tried to get the way through the crowd, without dashing anyone.
“Green Goa does not come only by opposing Coal, you should actually contribute for it,” Parrikar said talking to reporters at the sidelines of the event.
The chief minister said that he would love to use bicycle often, but is restrained due to the security cover he has been provided.
Appreciating the efforts of the organizers, Parrikar said such kind of events should be held at least once in six months in each of the city.
The NoMoZo concept had started in Panaji couple of years back which has discontinued now. Parrikar who represents Panaji constituency said that the concept would be revived in the capital city but has to keep in mind the issues related to traffic.
“The concept in Panaji was more stress on the walk and as a result reduce the use of vehicles and control pollution,” he said.
Talking to reporters, Khaunte said that the aim of the event was to create opportunities for the younger generation to come along with their parents and enjoy the day, away from the vehicular traffic.
“Everybody has kept their vehicles and come today. This will also help in reviving old traditions,” the minister said adding that the event will help the youths to stay away from gadgets and social media for some time.
