Panaji (Goa): The Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Chandrakant Kavlekar has petitioned Union Minister for Shipping Nitin Gadkari demanding that six rivers from Goa be removed from the National Waterways Act, 2016.

In a letter to Gadkari, Kavlekar has demanded that amendment be moved in the next winter session of the Parliament and the six rivers, namely, Chapora, Cumbarjua, Mandovi, Mapusa, Sal and Zuari be deleted from the Schedule of the Act.

The CLP held its meeting today evening, wherein they resolved to ominously oppose the nationalization and coal expansion projects on the Floor of the House during the upcoming winter session of the State Legislative Assembly.

The party has also demanded public hearing on the nationalization project.

“We have written to the Union Minister for Shipping raising our opposition to the nationalization of six rivers. We want Goa government to also pass a resolution on the Floor of the House to remove all the six rivers from the National Waterways Act, 2016,” Kavlekar told reporters after the meeting.

“State and Central government should respect the sentiments of the people and drop nationalization plan for Goan rivers,” he added.
