Saligao (Goa): The State woke up to a rude shock on the New Year day when a young footballer Avrhisto Fernandes was found dead at his home at Saligao village. The police said that the 21-year-old committed suicide but the reason behind taking this extreme step still remains a mystery. The youngster allegedly ended his life after celebrating the New Year party with his friends. The Goan player was playing for Sporting Clube de Goa.
“He returned back from a party with friends and an alarm was raised when he was not opening the door in the morning. His body was removed by breaking open a window. The cause of the death is not yet known,” Saligao Inspector Santosh Dessai said.
The football fraternity have called it is a huge loss to the Goan side whom he represented in the Goa Pro League. Fernandes had also played for Sporting Goa at the Under-15 age group before joining SESA Football Academy for three years before eventually returning to Sporting as an Under-20 player. He made the cut to the senior side thereafter. He played in the Goa League last season and is said to be one of the team’s main players for the upcoming season too.
