Panaji (Goa) Congress party today said that it is in debt of then Prime Minister Late Indira Gandhi, for granting opinion poll through an act in the Parliament thereby, allowing Goa to have its identity separate from neighbouring Maharashtra.

“The Congress party in Goa is in debt of then Prime Minister Late Indira Gandhi who had given us opinion poll by passing Opinion Poll Act in the Parliament, which was a historic legislation and no such legislation is every been passed in the Parliament thereafter,” Congress principal general secretary Altinho Gomes said in a press statement issued.
“Congress party respectfully remember Dr Jack Sequeira, Purshottam Kakodkar and other local leaders who fought for the victory of opinion poll and for the cause of keeping Goa an union territory,” he said.
