Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said that the demand of taxi operators to do away with the installation of speed governors cannot be admitted. Parrikar told reporters that the installation on Speed Governors on all the taxis is mandatory as per the supreme court guidelines and State will attract contempt of court, if they are allowed to ply without these gadgets (speed governors).

The Chief Minister said that February 24, 2018 is a deadline for the taxi operators to install Speed Governor on their vehicles following which they would not be issued fitness certificate by State Transport Department.

Parrikar said that no action would be taken against the taxi operators who are peacefully keeping their vehicle off the road. “My warning of action against them was only in case they resort to violence. If they don’t ply their vehicle, I cant force them to get it on the road,” he said.

Parrikar said that the Essential Service Management Act was invoked in the State yesterday only to ensure that the taxi operators are forced to ply their vehicle, if needed by the State.
