Manipal Hospital – Goa unveils Sleep and Breathing Centre

Panaji (Goa): Manipal Hospitals Goa unveiled a first of its kind ‘Sleep and Breathing Centre’ at the hospital premises. The Centre was inaugurated by Minister for Transport Ramkrishna alias Sudin Dhavalikar, in the presence of Unit Head, Girish Babu Bommakanti, Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Chief of Clinical Services & HOD Oncology department and Dr. Prabhu Prasad, Consultant Pulmonologist, Manipal Hospitals Goa. With an aim to provide speedy and efficient care for all forms of sleep disorders, the centre is well equipped with experienced pool of doctors and a complete sleep diagnostic suite.

 

Sleep related breathing disorders constitute a subset of the broad group of sleep disorders that include many other disorders such as insomnia, hypersomnias, parasomnias, and sleep related movement disorders. Sleep disorders cause continuous arousals, excessive daytime sleepiness with all related effects on the capacity of concentration and attention.

 

The facility will offer comprehensive, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment plan to address particular needs of the patient. Issues like severity of symptoms, patient’s lifestyle, associated morbid conditions like COPD, asthma, heart failure will be managed with the help of expert pool of doctors. Patients will be evaluated thoroughly to understand the underlying causes using supportive studies such as pulmonary function testing and chest x-ray, as well as CT scanning of the lungs, if necessary regular follow-up, education, and compliance will be strongly emphasised. Additionally there would be special emphasis on treatment of insomnia and CPAP compliance for sleep apnea with cognitive therapy.

 

Speaking on the occasion Transport Minister Sudin Dhavalikar said, “I congratulate Manipal Hospitals Goa for this new initiative which will be a boon for the people of Goa. Sleep deprivation causes health to deteriorate drastically and ultimately lead to chronic and fatal consequences. Knowing the importance of quality sleeping and the dangers of sleep deprivation, hospital’s efforts to spread awareness on this is commendable.”
