New Delhi: The Supreme Court today quashed the renewal of 89 mining leases from Goa, bringing down the industry to the shut down stage again. The mine owners and the stakeholders remained tight lipped and shocked over the judgment.

Goa Foundation had approached the apex court challenging the renewal of the mining leases by the State government, which happened after the SC ban on the industry in the year 2014.

While The Neutral View is yet to get detailed judgement, the sources stated that SC has said that the government renewing the leases is a violation of law and previous SC orders.

The apex court has now directed the government to go for fresh bidding process.

The SC has also directed setting up of Special Investigation Team comprising of chartered accountants for recovery of amount from mining companies who were allowed to extract ores in violation of law.

The decision has come as a setback for the mining industry. The mine owners are yet to react to the situation.
