Panaji (Goa): The heavy rains that hit the State on Monday early morning brought much needed respite from the soaring mercury.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the southwest monsoon may reach Goa by June 6, a week after hitting the Kerala coast.

IMD Goa director Mohan Lal Sahu said that the rain and thunder showers experienced by Goa today are not pre-monsoon but non seasonal summer showers. “The pre-monsoon showers may hit the State by next week,” he said.

“The southwest monsoon has already reached Andaman and if situation remains normal, the monsoon may arrive Goa by June 6,” he said.

The IMD has predicted normal monsoon for the State.

Sahu said that State may witness showers at isolated placed for next 48 hours.

As per IMD records, the chief amounts of rainfall was recorded at Valpoi 4cm, Canacona and Sanguem 2 cm each, Pernem Margao Mapusa and Quepem 1 cm each.

The day temperature which stood between 34-35 Degree Celsius for last couple of weeks has come down to 31 Degree Celsius. The night temperature also witnessed drop.
