Panaji (Goa): After a series of closure of primary schools in the last couple of years owing to less number of students, the State is left with 1,729 government, aided and unaided schools. Out of the total, 1157 are primary schools, 64 middle schools, 408 high schools and 100 higher secondary schools.

The data for the year 2017-18 academic year, released by the State Education Department shows that 886 are government schools and 843 are aided and unaided schools. Among these, maximum 687 are Marathi medium primary schools followed by 247 aided and unaided English primary schools.

Ironically, in the State where there two groups of educationists from Konkani/Marathi lovers and English supporters are at loggerheads over grants from government; barely 20 Konkani medium government primary schools exist as against 43 aided and unaided primary schools in the same medium of instruction. There are no high schools in the State’s official language whereas 41 are middle schools in English medium, 20 aided and unaided middle schools (English); and 70 and 320 government and aided-unaided high schools respectively are operating pan-Goa.

Considering high demand for English medium education, there are nine English medium government higher secondary schools and another 91 aided-unaided higher secondary schools.

Goa has a total 97,044 primary students, 71,160 middle-level students, 71,630 secondary level students, and 36,975 higher secondary students.
