Sanvordem (Goa): More than 50 people fell into the river when Portuguese-era dilipated bridge in Curchorem village caved in today. The number of casualties due to this accident is yet to be known.
The incident happened this evening when a youth who had jumped into the river to commit suicide was being rescued by fire and emergency service personnel. While the operation to rescue this youth was going on, the bridge caved in, a police official said.
“There were around 50 people on the bridge who had assembled to see the rescue operation and all of them were flung into the river. Some of them managed to swim to the shore,” he said.
The fire and emergency services have began searching to see whether there is any casualty. The search is also going on in side the collapsed portion of the bridge. The details are awaited.
