Sanvordem (Goa): The operation to search for missing persons persons who were fallen into the river after bridge collapsed at Sanvordem village in South Goa resumed this morning.

At least two people were drowned and several others are missing after the bridge collapsed yesterday. State police have confirmed that 14 people were rescued from water and were admitted to different hospitals, while search is on for more.

“The rescue operation which had began last evening was called off post-mid night due to poor visibility in the area. It has resumed again since morning,” Superintendent of Police Shekhar Prabhudesai said.

The divers from Indian Navy and also Drishti Lifesaving Services, a private agency which is manning Goa’s beaches, are pressed in to search the bodies.

The work has also began to cut the portion of the collapsed bridge, below which there is a possibility that few people might have been trapped.

The portion of a bridge had collapsed when fire and emergency services was busy in rescuing a youth who had jumped into Sanvordem river, a tributary of River Zuari.

The Portuguese-era bridge which was closed for commuters had around 50 people breaking the barricades and standing on it to witness the rescue operation.
