Sanvordem (Goa): Though Public Works Department minister Sudin Dhavalikar was quick enough to blame locals for Sanvordem bridge collapse, the fact remains that this structure was in unsafe condition and state government had no time to dismentle it.

The incident that has killed two people, at least till now, has raised concern about the condition of several such bridges which are lying in dilapidated condition and still being used.

The locals at Sanvordem stated that this bridge was closed officially some 15 years back but was not dismantled. The footbridge was corroding and was in a bad shape.

This bridge was also used Ganesh Visarjan every year. “If it had to happen during Ganesh Visarjan, no one can think what would have happened. Last year, I literally begged to the people not to stand on that portion. Few people were listening and rest ignored,” said a local.

Meanwhile,  Indian Navy has said that the diving was undertaken last night but was stopped at 03.30 a.m, at the order of South Goa collector.

“The collapsed part of bridge was removed . Diving was stopped during removing of bridge. Diving recommenced at 01.10.  At about 03.30 amon request of Collector, diving was stopped. Diving operations has resumed now,” the spokesman said.

He said since Crocodiles are known to be present in the area,  the precautions being taken for safety of the divers.

“As per local input, there may be two more persons missing. Chetak helicopter sortie being undertaken along the river for arial search,” he added.
