Dona Paula (Goa): Two years ago, Dayne Coelho made a tryst with destiny. And, when the time came this year to redeem that pledge, this Goa lad did not fail his people. In the Olympic RS:X class at the All India Board Sailing Championship organised by Goa Yachting Association (GYA), Dayne was officially crowned champion.
He claimed the championship trophy from Capt. Dilip Donde (Retd) — the first Indian to sail around the world solo — who was the chief guest at prize distribution ceremony following the races. In his address to the sailors, Capt. Donde congratulated the sailors for their achievements and encouraged them to put in their best efforts in pursuit of success.
Dayne has now set his sights on the upcoming Asian Games at Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2018.
Russell Lobo is another Goan lad who has shown great promise by making a clean sweep in the Asian Games RS:One class, thereby strengthening his claim to represent the country at the Asian Games and other international competitions in this youth class.
Raunak Pai in the Men’s Raceboard class and Katya Coelho in the Women’s Raceboard class finished far ahead of their rivals in all races.
In the BIC Nova Class, Santosh Dethaliya of DSCC Bhopal managed to retain his advantage and pip his rival Naveen Singh Rawat of INWTC Goa to the title.
The morning session was devoted to the Goa State Board Sailing Championship age-group races.
