India put up a dominant performance to beat Australia 4-1 in the Uber Cup Women’s Team championship 2018, underway at Bangkok, Thailand.
After going down 1-4 to Canada in the opening match, this was a much improved display by the team comprising of several young faces, led by Saina Nehwal.
Goa’s Anura Prabhu Desai, playing her debut Uber Cup match, registered an easy 21-6, 21-7 win over Zecily Fung in the third singles and last match of the tie to make it 4-1 in favour of India . In earlier matches, Saina Nehwal beat Hsuan-Yu Wendy Chen 21-14, 21-19; Vaishnavi Reddy Jakka, beat Jennifer Tam 21-17, 21-13 and Sanyogita Ghorpade / Prajakta Sawant defeated Louisa Ma / Ann-Louise Slee 21-19, 21-11 while Meghana Jakkampudi / Poorvisha S Ram suffered a 13-21, 16-21 loss to Gronya Somerville / Renuga Veeran.
India’s hopes to qualify for the quarters will depend on their next clash against a formidable Japan.
