PANAJI

The Cinephile Film Club of Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) will be screening 1957 British-American war film- ‘The Bridge On The River Kwai’ on Thursday, June 28, 6:30 pm. The screening will be hosted by renowned film critic Sachin Chatte.

The film is directed by David Lean, starring Alec Guiness, William Holden and Sessue Hayakawa. The duration of the film is 2 hrs 35 minutes.

Winner of 7 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor (Alec Guinness), Best Director, Best Cinematographer, Best Editing, Best Music and Best Writing – The Bridge on the River Kwai remains a timeless classic made by one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, David Lean who made films like Dr.Zhivago, A Passage to India, Ryans Daughter and Lawrence of Arabia.

While there have been many war films, few focus on the individuals involved in the war. The story is set in Burma in 1943 in a Japanese POW camp where Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa, in a Oscar-nominated performance) insists that the British colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), ask his men to build a bridge on the river Kwai so that the Japanese can transport their ammunition. There is more conflict as one of the prisoners (William Holden), revolts against the idea and tries his best to scuttle the plans. Shot in the picturesque jungles of Sri Lanka, the film also made Colonel Bogey March popular. Released in cinemascope, this big spectacle is a treat to watch on the big screen.
