Calangute police have arrested a person on charges of extortion.
According to Calangute police Station in charge PI Jiva Dalvi, the arrest was made based upon the complaint made by a businessman running two restaurants.
The accused was every month allegedly going to various restaurants and collecting money by threatening them.
One businessman came forward yesterday and lodged a complaint and subsequently an FIR was registered.
The complainant stated that the accused person was extorting money from the two restaurants for the last three months. In his complaint, he said that one local would come to his restaurants and after threatening to kill him and staff members, would extort money from them.
The restaurant owner then installed CCTV cameras in his restaurants in order to identify the extortionist, and on Tuesday approached Calangute police with the video footage which showed the accused threatening the staff of the restaurant.
Based on the CCTV footage, Calangute police identified the accused as Stanley Coutinho, a resident of Tivaiwaddo, Calangute.
Police raided Coutinho’s residence late on Tuesday and recovered the extorted money. The police also seized a vehicle and a mobile phone from the possession of accused.
Coutinho has been arrested and charged under sections 451, 506 (ii) and 386 IPC for trespass, threatening with dire consequences and extorting money by threatening to kill or hurt.
