Panaji (Goa): The beaches in the state are closed for tourism activity from today onwards with the pre-monsoon rains hitting the state.

“The tourism season 2016-17 draws to a close today. Most of the shack operations have closed and shack structures removed for the season. Water sports activities and other adventure activities have also stopped for the season,” State tourism director Menino D’Souza said.

He said “We are certain that the season has been a successful one for most tourism stakeholders in Goa. The tourism department along with Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) is now ready for monsoon tourism and the next four months will be as promising as always.”

“The Sunday monsoon trekking expeditions, white water river rafting, monsoon festivals, tours and sightseeing to some of Goa’s popular waterfalls will be promoted extensively,” he said.

Drishti Lifesaving Services has also issued advisory  cautioning locals as well as the tourist not to venture into the sea.

“We have put up red flags at all the beaches which means that the area is not meant for swimming. It’s advisable to steer clear of the high tide line in such circumstances,” said P N Pandey, General Manager (Operations), Drishti Lifesaving Pvt. Ltd.

“Even wading into the sea can be risky. We are closely monitoring the weather conditions. We strongly advise visitors not to venture into the sea as the sea and weather conditions are very rough,” he said.

“Our team of lifeguards present along the coast are monitoring the surroundings. The team is trained to carry out rescues even in rough weather.”

The Goa government shuts down the beaches for swimming and all water sports activities during the monsoon months from June to September each year as the sea during this season tends to be extremely rough and choppy.
