Minister for water resources Vinod Palyekar along with the Chief Engineer of Water Resource Department and technical staff visited Varanasi to acquire the first hand knowledge of Ganga cleaning and rejuvenation process envisaged by Ministry of water resources, Government of India.
He visited some sites along the river and had detailed discussions with officials of Central Water Commission led by Director Anupam Prasad also present were officials of UP Jal Nigam led by SE Sanjay Singh. Mr. Prasad apprised Hon. Minister the details of the river which originates at Gangotri and gets polluted at Kanpur and Varanasi, He cited that withdrawals are huge resulting in non maintenance of requisite flows in the river; he also briefed the Minister about the measures envisaged for rejuvenation and the present cleaning process. Hon. Minister and technical staff held discussions which were conducive for foam conditions and mitigating the pollution and flooding.
Hon. Minister will also visit the automatic quality monitoring station set up by national hydrology project to get appraised with the same and envisage setting up such a station in Goa under NHP.
