“Eviction proceedings for evicting Mahiti Ghars from unauthorized occupation of government premises are under way,” official spokesperson said.

Officials said that there are many complaints against the functioning of Mahiti Ghars that have been received from the general public and accordingly the government decided to act upon.

Under the first scheme ‘A’ there were seven mahiti ghars set up at Panaji, Mapusa, Quepem, Ponda, Sanguem, Poinguinim and Margao. Separately under scheme ‘B’ further six ghars were set up at Valpoi, Bicholim, Sanquelim, Rivona and Canacona.

The ghars were supposed to provide a list of fifteen services including providing copies of Form I & XIV, birth and death certificates, issue information on schemes, survey maps, etc.

Instead they were implementing only three of the listed fifteen services and were involved in other activities outside their domain resulting into scams and loss to government exchequers.
