Pune: A recently declared survey by Global Innovation Index (GII) on world’s largest inventive clusters has placed Pune at the 96th position in top 100 clusters. Identifying and ranking the clusters of inventive activity was carried out for the 2017 edition of GII.
CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL), Pune has contributed significantly by its inventive activities and played a crucial role to propel Pune into top 100 clusters of the world on the basis of data on International Patent Fillings. The Global Innovation Index focused on the innovation performance of countries and its perspectives on Innovation activities. It also covers important characteristics in innovation performance within countries, as innovation activities tend to be geographically concentrated in selected clusters linked to a single city or a set of neighboring cities.
An empirical approach was adopted for the analysis and identification that proceeded in several stages. The patent data in specified research was described and geocoded to enable the identification of clusters. Investigation was done on the patents published between 2010 and 2015 under the Patent Cooperation Treaty System, operated by the World Intellectual Property Organization.
Three clusters from India are included in the list such as Bengaluru (43rd), Mumbai (95th) and Pune (96th). Bengaluru and Mumbai performed well having PCT fillings 2,479 and 1,012, respectively. Pune cluster has 1006 PCT fillings that earned it a position in the top hundred.
