PUNE: A 30-year-old woman who was in search of a groom was cheated to the tune of Rs 95000 by a fraudster who posed as a prospective groom to the woman before swindling her funds.
The fraudster met the victim on an online matrimonial website and told her that he stays abroad. The duo then shared their profiles with each other. The cheating incident occurred between May 31 and June 21 this year. After a few days, the fraudster started calling the victim and her parents. He established a trust with the victim and promised to marry her.
Later, the fraudster asked for Rs 25000 from the victim for Overseas Citizen Of India(OCI) registration. The victim did as the fraudster instructed her. Later, the fraudster called the victim and told her that he is been held at Delhi airport by the customs department, for which, the fraudster asked the victim to pay Rs 70000 for his release. The victim believed in the fraudster and paid the amount after which there was no communication from the fraudster.
The victim then approached Vishrambaug police station and lodged a case of cheating against the fraudster. In her complaint, the victim told police that the accused identified himself as Abhiram Manik. Police inspector Amrut Marathe is investigating the case.
