Panaji (Goa) The Goa Traffic Police claims that accidents in two major places at Vasco and Ponda have dropped as it has devised a system of identifying and monitoring black spots where accidents are prone to occur.
The exercise is being carried out across the State in a bid to curb the spate of accidents that’s taking place on Goan roads and this, Superintendent of Police (SP), Devesh Kumar Mahla said is bearing fruits.

“Vasco and Ponda has seen a drop in accidents as compared to the previous years after monitoring of these black spots. Depending on the stretches where fatal and grievous accidents have been reported, certain black spots have been identified and monitored. At these points and time, the Traffic-in-Charge himself remains physically present to supervise traffic management and this has shown remarkable results,” he said opening that, “If these few but small aspects are looked into and controlled, accidents will definitely decrease.”

Speaking about the initiative to rein in cops who violate traffic rules themselves, he said, “If a cop violates traffic rules, not only is he issued a challan but departmental action is also taken against the cop. We have also recently constituted a vigilance squad to ensure traffic cops on duty don’t stop vehicles unnecessarily. We have also instructed traffic cops to wear name plates whenever on duty. We have told them not to stop those following rules unnecessarily.”

SP Mahla further talks of their Traffic Cell’s attempt at sensitising the public on road safety through the centres of learning. So also, each traffic cell in their respective traffic cell area are adopting three schools where students from these institutions are imparted training on road safety and safe driving.
