PANAJI (GOA): “Restore the powers of Parliament and do not permit Judiciary or Election Commission to take them away, which rightfully belong to the great institution,” said MP Shantaram Naik today in the Rajya Sabha while giving his farewell speech.
Naik, whose term ends on July 28 further said in his speech that the contention of judiciary is because Legislature and the executives fail in their duty to act, prompting the apex court to intervene. Naik also said that Prime Minister cannot give judgments just because legislature or executive is not acting, so also, judiciary cannot enact laws on grounds that legislature or executive is not acting.
“The Election Commission should also remain within the boundaries of election law and should not issue orders or instructions on subject which fall within the realm of Parliament,” said Naik.
Naik also said narrated in his speech the episode when Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi responding to Naik’s demand in the Lok Sabha on Goa’s statehood issue, stood up and acceded to the demand of the people of Goa, making the day extremely memorable to him.
