Porvorim (Goa) Here comes a bomb statement from our chief minister.
Manohar Parrikar told the House that Karnataka was trying to plant ecological bomb through their plans to dam Mhadei river.
“There are certain issues that cannot be dealt with the governments based on a party lines. All Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) will have to come together, where there is interest of the State,” he said responding to a Zero Hour mention in the State Legislative Assembly today.
Parrikar said that he could try to speak to the Maharashtra counterpart and convince him on the issue. “But it is the dispute so you cannot handle it on the party lines,” the chief minister said.
Parrikar said that Mahadeyi (which is known as Mandovi in Goa) has 78 per cent of its basin in Goa. “Of total all the river basins in Goa, 47 per cent is that of Mahadeyi,” he said.
He stated that the damming the water upstream will increase salinity in the rivers of state and also ecologically affect the areas up to Western Ghat. “This is ecological bomb that Karnataka is planting in the forms of dams,” the Chief minister said on the floor of the House.
