Gleneagles Global Health City, the largest facility of Gleneagles Global Hospitals, has successfully performed a heart and bilateral lung transplant on a 26-year-old girl from Satara. The surgery was performed by Dr Sandeep Attawar, programme director of Gleneagles Global Health City, and his team in May this year at the Gleneagles Global Health City in Perumbakkam, Chennai.
Komal Godase, hailing from Satara, had been experiencing symptoms associated with breathlessness and loss of appetite. Due to this, Komal had lost 14 kgs very rapidly and was experiencing severe weakness. Komal had started developing intense cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membrane) due to which she was completely oxygen mask dependent since March 2017. Komal had visited many hospitals all over the country in order to get the proper diagnosis and treatment for her symptoms, but was unable to do so. Doctors had prescribed some medicines but they too were unable to solve her issues.
Finally, she was directed towards Dr Attawar and his team at Gleneagles Global Health City in Chennai. Under Dr Attawar and his team’s supervision, she finally found some respite. At Gleneagles Global Health City, Komal was diagnosed with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension, which is a rare disease characterised by elevated pulmonary artery pressure with no apparent cause, end stage lung disease and severe right ventricular failure. Dr Attawar and his team briefed Komal and her family on her condition and informed them that the only treatment for this was heart and bilateral lung transplant. After stabilisation, Komal was then discharged with a hope that she will receive the required organs for transplantation. In May 2017, she received a call from Gleneagles Global Health City on the availability of organs and underwent the surgery in the same month.
“Komal was very frail and confused when she was brought into our facility in Chennai. She had already undergone the ordeal of visiting many hospitals due to which the family and patient had lost all hopes of recovery”, recalls Dr Sandeep Attawar. “We at Gleneagles Global Health City were very happy to receive a heart and pair of lungs that were a match for Komal and went ahead with the surgery as soon as possible. I am glad that the surgery was a huge success and that we were able to provide Komal and her family with some much needed respite,” Dr Attawar added.
The surgery was a success and Komal was then kept for a few more months for further observation. Luckily, the post-operative period was uneventful and Komal was discharged in June 2017. Komal and her family are very pleased with the result and are glad that she can now continue to live her life normally.
