Speaking of draping, “Draping is an art in fashion to play with fabric.”It is an art that dates back to 3500 BCE, a “fitted” garment would be sewn together and worn close to the body, in contrast to a “draped” garment, such as a toga that doesn’t require sewing. With this workshop, the students were taught new draping techniques, the importance of draping and where and how to use drapes. Fashion draping is the oldest method used since the 18th century. The techniques for draping fabric require the knowledge of the fabric’s characteristics. The fabrics and clothes must relate to our lifestyles because our active lifestyles consist of different fabrics such as stretchy or knitted fabrics, chiffon, georgette, organza, sheer cotton, silks and much more!
There was an informal interview with the designer, where Mrs. Varsha Chandwani chatted with him asking him for his opinion of fashion, trends in India, his personal style statements and experiences with celebrities. The children were given a chance to ask their own set of questions as well. The interactive session was fun for the students and faculty both!
The workshop came to an end with the students walking down the ramp after being draped on by other fellow students. There were whistles, thunders of claps, loud cheers, and energy level of the auditorium was very high. A thank you speech was presented by Tanuja Chand, an INIFDian, followed by a photo session where everyone had their chance to get them clicked with the designer. It was a workshop to remember, with the infectious positive vibe that flowed from Kawaljit to the students and vice-versa.
