Panaji (Goa) Tightening the noose around traffic violators including repeat offenders, Goa Police has moved the local court recommend suspending over 3,000 licensees.
In a report to the Judicial Magistrate First Class and Transport Department, the Traffic Department has recommended suspending 3,207 licenses of traffic offenders recorded from January 1, 2017 to September 30, 2017.
Out of these, maximum 1,737 cases are of drunk driving followed by 1,297 cases of talking on mobile while driving.
Senior Goa Police Officers had recently announced that they will move the higher court seeking action against the offenders, if the lowet court fails to deliver order on its reports. Director General of Police Muktesh Chander had said this will act as a deterrent to drivers in the State.
The coastal State has been witnessing huge number of drunken driving cases some of which have led to fatalities.
Despite detecting and imposing fine on drunk deiving offenders, the department claimed the menace continues as there is no further action. “Not a single offender has faced jail or suspension of licenses based on our recommendation to the JMFC to penalise them under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. If we face the same result this time too, we will think of appealing in the higher court to either suspend the licence and/or send the offender to jail as per the law,” Chander said.
