Panaji (Goa): Several villagers from the mining belts of Quepem, Curchorem and Sanguem on Wednesday took on the chiefs of Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and the Directorate of Mines and Geology (DMG) over the rampant and non monitored iron ore transportation taking place through their villages.

The citizens highlighted the gross violation of Goa (Prevention of illegal mining, storage and transportation of minerals) Rules, 2013 by the mining companies and questioned the blatant silence of DMG and GSPCB over the violations.

They pointed out that despite Supreme Court order clearly directing the authorities for strict vigil and necessary action against offenders, there has been complete failure on their part.

Anti-mining crusader and AAP leader Ravindra Velip told media persons that mining firms are involved in gross violations of mining transportation rules and norms set under Consent to Operate by GSPCB to meet the never ending greed for money.

“The State government agencies has allowed mining companies to violate all the laws in force, which leads to rash, negligent and uncontrolled mining transportation causing accidents and loss of life,” he said.

Velip said that despite several complaints, both DMG and GSPCB have failed to act against the mining companies, who are involved in illegal transportation of ore.

The villagers are seeking legal advice to approach Supreme Court with a contempt application against DMG and GSPCB, for violating the Apex Court directives issued in illegal mining case.
