  • Team TNV
  • 7:00 am

When the new iron ore mining season will commence in the State in October,there is something to cheer for the mining companies as well as the State government,with the Supreme Court considering to enhance the ore production capacity, which is currently capped at 20 million tons annually. The Expert Committee in its final report placed before the Apex Court had recommended enhancing the fresh ore production cap to 30 million tons and further 38 million tons on augmentation of required infrastructure by the State government. The Committee in its interim report earlier had proposed 20 million tons production limit for Goa- which is currently in force. The Supreme Court is hearing the illegal mining case filed by Goa Foundation in 2012. The ongoing mining season for the State will conclude on May 31 thereafter temporary suspension of activities for four month monsoon season. Speaking to sections of media, after representing Goa’s demand before the Apex Court on Monday, Additional solicitor General of India Atmaram Nadkarni said that the Court is positive towards State demand and has said it will consider it in July when the bench will resume after the vacation. Nadkarni explained that the Supreme Court appointed Expert Committee in its final report has proposed that the earlier assessed fresh extraction limit of 20 million tons per annum need to be enhanced to 30 million tons. “On Monday, the Court agreed to consider our demand; but since the bench will be now on vacation, the matter is been kept in July. So, in the new mining season which will commence after the monsoon season, it is most likely that we will be able to extract enhanced ore limit,” he said For the ongoing season, total 44 leases have commenced operation. For the last financial year, leases achieved the target of 20 million tons. For the first two months of the current financial year, the Mines department has set target of 8 million tons before the mining firms.
