Panaji (Goa): The Transport Department has issued a show cause notice to the owner of a private bus that was involved in a fatal accident last Saturday.
The notice returnable on February 26 seeks reply on why the license, which is valid till year 2021 should not be suspended/cancelled.
“You are show cause as to why the stage carriage permit on route Panaji to Taleigao via St Inez, Miramar and vice versa valid upto 29/10/2021 should not be suspended/cancelled under section 86 of MV act and also the driving license of the driver driving the said bus on the sate and time of the accident should not be cancelled/suspended under section 19 of MV Act 1988 and rules there under within a period of seven days from date of this notice,” reads the show cause issued by assistant director transport (enforcement) N R Arolkar this morning.
On the morning of February 17, passengers were alighting from a Ponda bus when a local Taleigao bus sped into the Panaji Kadamba bus stand from the wrong side and ploughed into the unsuspecting alighting passengers.
Two passengers, 51-year-old Shankar Thakur from Curti Ponda and 72-year-old Tulsidas Bhat passed away while undergoing treatment at GMC whereas 25-year-old Prerna Bhagat from Ponda, 54-year-old Lou Vaigankar from Divar and 29-year-old Vincent Braganza from St Cruz were critically injured.
The errant driver fled the spot after the accident leaving the bus running. He was traced and arrested thereafter by the Panaji police.
The show cause notice has asked the owner of the bus as well as the bus driver on duty to appear before the officer (who issued the notice) at 11am on February 26failing which ex parte decision will be taken as deem fit.
