Panaji (Goa) The Chief Electoral Office (CEO) on Saturday issued notification about the by-election for the Panaji and Valpoi assembly constituency to be held on August 23.
With the publication of notification in the official gazette, the process for filing of nomination for both the seats begins. The last date for filing the nomination is August 5.
The notification states that the Panjim assembly constituency seat had fallen vacant on May 10 following resignation by BJP MLA Siddharat Kuncolienkar. Similarly, on March 16, Valpoi Congress MLA Vishwajit Rane had tendered his resignation as legislator and from the party.
“Now, therefore, in pursuance of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the Election Commission of India hereby- calls upon Panjim and Valpoi Assembly Constituency in the State of Goa, to elect, before the 31-08-2017 (Thursday) a person for the purpose of filling the said vacancy in the Legislative Assembly of the State,” the notification reads.
The model code of conduct for the State has already come into force from July 27 thus imposing restrictions on the government, political parties and the candidates.
The election process has to be completed by August 31. Currently, there are 38 MLAs in the 40-member State assembly.
The District administration under section 144, has imposed ban on carrying of all types of arms, fire arms, ammunition, lethal weapons in any public place, street, road squares, through fare, by lanes, or in any open place in entire District with immediate effect.
