Panaji (Goa): Drinking in public in Goa might now land you in jail with state police issuing instruction to its personnels to arrest people who are found drinking in open spaces.
Superitendent of Police (North) Karthik Kashyap informed police-public meeting at Calangute police station today that he has given instructions to arrest the persons found drinking in open place under section 34 of Indian Penal Code.
“Kashyap also called upon the general public if such things are noticed then they should be brought to the notice of police so that action can be initiated against such tourists,” reads the press note released by police department here.
The police-public meeting which was participated by around 60-70 people including beach shack owners and people in the tourism trade highlighted the problems faced by them by some tourists drinking on the beach at the night time.
They also pointed out that throwing the bottles or cans on the beach is hazardous and dangerous to the general public.
Police Inspector Jivba Dalvi informed the public that they are doing pro-active policing and within the span of four months they have booked four cases under anti-narcotics act and busted three prostitution racket rescuing eight victims.
