Calangute (Goa): A day after Calangute police cracked down on beggars rescuing four minor boys, the sleuths today rescued juvenile girls from Baga beach, another tourist popular beach stretch. The girls, aged between 11 and 16 years were rescued with the help of a local NGO and admitted to Apna Ghar.

In the two days of the drive, the police have so far rescued eight children – four girls and four boys and Police Inspector Jivba Dalvi said the drive will continue to ensure safety of the children.

“These children are found without their parents or guardians. They are rescued, counseled and then lodged at the shelter home as they need care and protection. There are many such children wandering on different beaches and their rescue will soon happen after proper scrutiny of the situations,” an officer said.

The crackdown comes after tourism department asked the police to take action against increasing menace of illegal hawkers and beggars on the beaches. Last weekend, Lobo had slammed the authorities for failing to tackle the menace that was creating a nuisance for the tourists on the beaches. Tourism Minister Azgaonkar charged Lobo with speaking without facts while mentioning that he has already directed police to take action
