The Goa Police will approach educational institutions to encourage its students to take up Traffic Sentinel, a recently launched scheme for citizens to report traffic violations and gain reward points in return.
“We will write to college principals to ask their students to participate in Traffic Sentinel Scheme. It will not only make them aware about traffic rules and follow them, but through this make others obey traffic rules,” Director General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander said addressing a gathering of young Traffic Sentinels who were rewarded for achieving the target.
Several school and college going children have enrolled themselves as volunteers under the Scheme, launched last year. Reporting various traffic offenses fetches them points, and on collecting 100 points the department rewards them with cash and citation.
While the Traffic Sentinels have taken up the tasks to report traffic violations, they are also asked do obey the rules and regulations. “If you (Traffic Sentinels) are found violating traffic rules, your reared points will be deducted,” Chander warned.
As of now, 37 Traffic Sentinels have been felicitated.
