GOA: LAY OFFS FEARED, VEDANTA ASKS ITS EMPLOYEES NOT TO REPORT ON MINES

Panaji (Goa) In what can be a sign of possible lay offs,  Vedanta has asked all its staff and workmen of Sesa Mining Corporation Limited not to report to the duty at mines with immediate effect until further notice.

Sesa Mining Corporation Limited which is one of the biggest player in iron ore mining scene of Goa has several hundred people working on its mining leases.

The corporation in the notice issued, has asked all employees “not to report for duty at the mines with immediate effect until further notice.”

“As you are aware that the SC by its order dated February 7 has asked for the stopping of all the mining operations with effect from March 16. Also Director of Mines and Geology have directed us to stop extraction of ore and in further communication has directed us to take care of only dewatering, safety and security of mines till further instruction,” reads the notice.

Vedanta has said that it therefore beyond the control of the company to continue the operations of the mines considering the SC judgment.

“Hence employees have been adviced not to report for duty at mines with immediate effect until further notice,” it adds.

SC has quashed 88 mining leases in the State bringing to halt entire industry. The people dependent on this industry has expressed worries over their livelihood.

The Union government has said that they would legal opinion from Attorney General of India in this matter.
