Chimbel (Old Goa): While the police are groping in the dark to nab the culprit involved in vandalizing 12 Cross at Madkaim even after the serial shrine vandal Francis Pereira is behind the bars, another desecration incident was reported this morning.
A 100-year-old Cross at a private property in Chimbel was found damaged even as there are indications that stray animals could have hit the structure. “The property is closed as the owner lives outside Goa. The cattle use this pathway to the paddy farm close to the site. There is every possibility the structure is damaged by the cattle as we have also found the footprints, but nevertheless a case of desecration is registered,” said a senior police officer.
Around 12 Crosses at Fatima Chapel’s crematorium at Karnzal in Madkaim was reported on Tuesday morning. While there are no clues about when the incident might have actually occurred, Pereira who has allegedly confessed to have defaced 150-odd shrines has denied his involvement in this case.
The Opposition has asked the government to probe into the role of more than one person involved in the series of attacks on shrines, as they could be behind the Madkaim case too. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has assured the State that miscreants in the Madkam would be arrested in 2-3 days.
