Amidst media reports that neighbouring Karnataka has illegally began diverting water on Mahadeyi river, Goa government today dispatched a team of officials to inspect the situation.

State Water Resources Department Minister Vinod Palyekar today took cognizance of media reports that had alleged that Karnataka had began work on construction of a dam to block Mahadeyi river water at Kankumbi village on the border. 

“With the media reports of Karnataka blocking Mahadeyi tributary and resuming work on diversion of project at Kankumbi, I have directed our chief engineer to immediately dispatch a team of engineers to do an inspection at the site,” Palyekar said.

He said that the team will leave for the spot today and will submit the detailed report by evening. 

Goa and Karnataka have disagreed with each other sharing of Mahadeyi river water following which the central government has formed the tribunal to fight out the case. 

Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar had recently written letter to BJP Karnataka chief B S Yedyurappa agreeing for bilateral talks with him on sharing the water which is required for drinking purpose to Karnataka. Parrikar’s letter had evoked strong criticism from the activists.
