Panaji (Goa): The government is contemplating to tie up with the private firm to encourage bicycling in the capital city of Panaji, the project which will kick off in next five to six months.
State Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told reporters today that a private firm has already demonstrated a different kind of bicycles fitted with GPS to him, who would be setting up a facility to rent bikes for the people to ride within the city.
Parrikar said that the environment-friendly conditions in the State could not be created overnight but the people will have to work for it.
“We are encouraging buses running on bio-fuel. But it does not happen overnight because it requires a lot of capital cost. In the same way, the best way to reduce it further is go to bicycle,” he said.
“You can use cycle while going to the market. What we have done is we are tying up with a firm for operating bicycle. We will only give them places where the cycle can be kept,” he said.
Parrikar said that the bicycles would be fitted with GPS and the user will have to register with the company. He said the company will put up the bicycle stand after every 300 meters where they can be parked.
He said that the company is conducting feasibility exercise for the project and bicycle stands would be set up in another five-six months.
