GOA: ST INEZ CREMATORIUM TO UNDERGO RENOVATION

Panaji (Goa) One of the oldest, St Inez crematorium will undergo renovation in the fag-end of the year. The Corporation of City of Panaji has decided to carry out the restoration and upgradation of the Catholic cemetery at St Inez through the Goa State Urban Development Agency. In an order issued by Mayor Surendra Furtado, the work includes demolition and reconstruction of the existing compound walls and internal walls including those walls which have the niches of containing mortal remains of the deceased.
“The general public is hereby informed that the mortal remains of the near and dear ones shall be removed in the presence of their relatives of the deceased in mid-November and kept in safe custody in the cemetery itself with due packaging and labeling the details of the same,” the note mentions. The corporation has informed that people can contact the concerned for any grievance / inquiry.
Besides local Christian population, kin and kith of non-Goan residents have also been cremated at this crematorium including Bollywood fashion designer Isha Mantry, who died in 2014 of alleged drug overdose. Founder of Tehelka Tarun Tejpal’s mother besides Bal Mundkur, a veteran in Indian advertising and founder of advertising firm Ulka were also cremated at the St Inez crematorium.
