Panaji (GOA): With increasing number of road accidents and subsequent deaths being reported this year, the Goa Government has decided to conduct safety audit of all the roads.
During the State Road Safety Council Meeting, chaired by Minister for Transport Ramakrishna Dhavalikar it was decided to conduct the road safety audit of the existing roads.
It is resolved to expedite the process of engaging an expert agency to carry out road safety audit. Also the public works department (PWD) engineers would be sent for training.
The Minister has directed the PWD and the traffic police to prepare an action plan to reduce the accidents and fatalities in the State.
It was informed during meeting that the Directorate of transport and the Goa police are in the process of procuring interceptors vehicles fitted with long range and high speed cameras to detect over speeding both during day and night.
As per the Supreme Court monitoring committee the directorate of transport has started the suspension of licences on the references made by Police Department. As per the Statistics October 2016 till March 2017 approximately 5066 licences had been suspended.
Also traffic cell had issued 50 thousand challans for riding without helmet.
There are more than 37 black spots identified in the State.
The council also accorded approval of setting up of certain census based driving track at ponda.
