Panaji (Goa): The State police claim they are zealous to swoop down on rampant drug-related activities but various factors including competition among the law enforcement agencies have made them helpless.
“Drug activity is not an individual activity but an organized activity and the dark-system that needs to be broken down. We are practically not putting pressure on that system because we need better pan-India coordination among the legal agencies and expertise,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Vimal Gupta said addressing a press conference this evening.
The IPS-cadre officer admitted that Goa police is active and have been taking cognizance of the illegal activities but it was just “temporary crisis on the system.” “Temporary crisis will not break the system. There is a need for coordination and cooperation among agencies. So also, no jurisdiction limits,” he claimed.
Responding to a question whether the national and state agencies share information to jointly crackdown on the menace, Gupta referred to competition between the authorities.
His justification came towards the police’s failure to track the source of drugs in the local market, wherein Goa is considered as the consumption point. The State police are on a special drive to eliminate drug activities, particularly after two young tourists died at separate rave parties in the coastal party zone of Vagator in North Goa.
Pakistan, Afghanistan and European countries are however some main links of drugs to Goa, and India.
The department is meanwhile training its officers to ensure every drug trafficker arrested during the raids are convicted. In a seminar organized today, the officers were also asked to strengthen their intelligence network.
Goa police including the anti narcotics cell has seized 41.5 kg of a cocktail of drugs from various parts of Ga, which is valued at Rs 1.33 crore. A total of 79 cases have been registered and 84 persons including 21 foreigners are arrested.
