Panaji (Goa): The State police have stepped up security across religious institutions after a series of desecration incidents reported in mere 72 hours in the South district. Deputy Inspector General of Police (law & order) Rupinder Kumar has instructed the police stations to forms special teams to crack down on the cases.
“Each Police Station in the South is asked to form teams to gather intelligence and crack down on the miscreants,” the officer told this reporter.
Three Crosses at Chandor were vandalised by unknown persons in the wee hours of July 1-2 while two more Crosses and Nandi statue in Krishna Temple; both at Margao were found desecrated early this morning.
The police higher ups have also intensified night patrolling by local police and PCR teams at sensitive as well as religious places even it the department is still groping in the dark you trace the accused.
The State Bharatiya Janata Party has condemned the desecration of the religious structures demanding strict action against the miscreants. “Government should take strict action against whoever is responsible.
Goa is a peaceful state and all live in harmony. If anyone indulges in disturbing the peace and communal harmony in Goa then the strictest punishment be given,” Dattaprasad Naik, spokesperson
BJP Goa State said.
Earlier in March two more Crosses were allegedly desecrated at Rachol in South Goa. The State had witnessed similar incidents in 2010 during the Congress regime and thereafter in 2012 during the BJP-led coalition prompting the respective government to form a special investigation team (SIT). It had resulted in a few arrests but years later, the series of cases has yet again come to haunt the State.
