Panaji (Goa): The Indian Meteorological department has predicted that the rains in the state will continue for next 48 hours. They have said that the rains are not due to cyclone Mora but because of the off shore turf which is running from the south of Maharashtra to Kerala.

The Met department which is constantly monitoring the off shore activities through its newly installed Doppler radar along with other facilities has said that the current rainfall is due to the off shore turf which is developed away from the west coast in the deep sea.

“The turf is running from the south of Maharashtra to Kerala coast resulting in the rains in this area,” said M C Sahu, Goa Director, Indian Meteorological Observatory.

He said that the rainfall will continue for next 48 hours in Goa with heavy rains expected in isolated places and moderate showers in the rest of Goa. “After 48 hours the rainfall will be reduced and will be scattered,” Sahu said.

The Met department has rubbished the rumours that the rains in Goa are due to Mora cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. “The rains in Goa have nothing to do with Mora cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. The cyclone has already weakened and it has no impact on Goa,” Sahu added.

Sahu said there is no prediction of gusty winds to be witnessed in the state. “The winds are not very strong. They are travelling at the speed of 10 kilometers per hour,” he said.

The Met department has installed Doppler radar at its Goa facility which has been operational from this season. Sahu said the radar has been operational and giving good results.
