Panaji (Goa) After missing out on the deadline due the financial issue, the proposed construction of New District and Subordinate Courts Complex at Merces for housing various Courts will be now set to be completed by January, 2018.
There are around 17,960 civil cases pending before various courts in the State for last two years.
State Minister for Law and Judiciary Francis D’Souza told House that the Court project estimated at the cost of Rs 120 crore was supposed to be completed in 2015, however, due to financial issues the project could not start till date.
“The High Court is monitoring the project and we expect it to be completed by January 15, 2018,” he said.
Minister said that government has proposed two more court buildings in South Goa and Bardez taluka to accommodate the courts in those areas under one roof.
The need for a full fledged government owned building to house the courts came into light after government record indicted that it spends over Rs 54 lakhs per month as a rent towards occupancy of the premises for various courts.
D’Souza said that government is in process of appointing 14 new judges to fill the vacancies in several courts.
The Government data reveals that there are 13,140 civil cases pending in North Goa courts and 4,820 cases in South Goa courts.
