Panaji (Goa):  Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar has blamed family raj in the educational institutions for degrading of the quality education in the state.

“If you see the educational institutes in the state, there is a tradition to employ the person from our own family as a teacher. The result you can see is that there is impact on the quality of education,” Parrikar said addressing an event organized by Economic Development Corporation today.

The chief minister recalled that during his visit to educational centre training the teachers, he asked them why they chose to be the teachers. “Some could give satisfactory answer, some could not and some did not answer,” he said.

Parrikar said since there is a lot of respect for teacher and there is a handsome salary, many people choose to select this profession rather than their interest for teaching.

The chief minister also questioned the historic rise in the passing percentage of student for board examination. “We have seen student scoring 90 per cent or more marks and passing percentage going up.When we were in school, I secured 68 per cent,” he said.

“I was going through a newspaper and I found that 50 years back the 68.57 per cent students had passed and highest scorer had got 82 per cent marks,” he said raising questions on the skyrocketing percentage of students achieving in the examinations.
