Panaji (GOA) The petrol will be costlier in Goa from midnight, with State government hiking Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel by two percent.
The petrol prices will now cost Rs 1.50 per litre more from midnight. At present the petrol prices are between Rs 61 to 62.25 per litre.
In an extraordinary notification issued by Additional Secretary Finance Michael D’Souza, the VAT on petrol his further hiked from 15 percent to 17 percent. The new rates will come into force from September 1.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar while presenting his Budget in March, had imposed 15 percent hike in VAT on petrol. He had assured that the petrol prices in Goa will continue to remain below Rs 65 per litre during his tenure.
Goa government had kept petrol prices below Rs 60 per litre during last five years by reducing the VAT on it.
its earlier tenure in 2012 had abolished VAT on petrol and had brought down the petrol price by Rs 11. However, from 2015 onwards, Government hiked the VAT on petrol with a sole objective of revenue generation.
